AMES, Iowa - The Leopards opened the New Year by traveling 1,000 miles to take on Iowa State, a squad fresh off an Elite Eight appearance in last season's NCAA Tournament. Lafayette's defense kept the Cyclones below its season scoring average of 76 points per game, but ultimately fell 67-25.
The Leopards (2-12) held the nation's third-leading three-point scoring team to a 27 percent showing from beyond the arc, well below its 45.3 season average. Lafayette's defensive pressure also forced 17 Cyclones turnovers, more than their season average of 13.7 per game.
LaKeisha Wright led the Leopards with seven points and collected four rebounds but the squad's 25 points marked a season low.
Iowa State (11-1), meanwhile, extended its win streak to 10 games and also captured its 47th straight non-conference home victory at Hilton Coliseum. Chelsea Poppens led Iowa State with 22 points in 27 minutes of action.
The Leopards held Iowa off the scoreboard for the first three and a half minutes while jumping out to a 5-0 lead. The Cyclones countered with 18 unanswered points over the next seven minutes
Lafayette racked up eight fouls over that span that led to seven Cyclones points from the charity stripe. Iowa State finished the game 24-34 from the free throw line as the Leopards finished the game with 25 fouls to the Cyclones' eight.
Wright snapped the Leopards' nearly seven-minute scoring drought with her first bucket of the evening, but it remained a 22-7 Iowa State lead with 9:10 left.
Despite holding the Cyclones without a basket for the final 2:29 of the period, Lafayette went into halftime down 35-14.
Iowa State again went the first several minutes of the second half without a point, but Lafayette's offense also struggled and it stood a 38-16 Cyclones lead at the 16-minute mark.
Lauren Jackson converted on a three-point play at 13:12 and dished out an assist on Samantha Jordan's basket less than a minute later, making it 42-21.
Jordan added another layup to cap off a 7-3 Lafayette run for a 42-23 ballgame.
The Leopards struggled to further close the gap and Iowa State went on to the 42-point win.
Lafayette opens Patriot League play, and wrap-ups its season-long six game-road trip, on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Holy Cross.
