EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette volleyball team hosted Army, the defending Patriot League champion, on Friday night and dropped a three-set encounter at Kirby Sports Center. The Black Knights took the match by scores of 25-6, 25-17 and 25-14. The Leopards got six kills from senior co-captain Katrina Racibarskas, and freshman libero Mackenzie Larsen led the Lafayette defense with 16 digs.
With the loss, Lafayette falls to 4-18 overall and 0-8 in Patriot League play. Army moves to 7-1 in league action with a 14-10 mark overall.
In addition to the half-dozen kills from Racibarskas, senior co-captain Kayly Elmer and freshman Karissa Ciliento each added three finishers for the Maroon and White. Sophomore Kaitlynn Zoller had a pair of kills, and sophomore Sarah Frohnapfel and freshman Gina Morrone rounded out the attack with one apiece. Freshman Molly Belcher and Frohnapfel shared the setting duties for the Leopards, posting eight and six assists, respectively.
Larsen's 16 digs earned her a split of the match high with Army's Brittany Jensen. Elmer chipped in six digs as the Black Knights held a considerable edge in the back row, 61-44. Lafayette's two blocks both came courtesy of Zoller and sophomore Alexandra Russo.
Megan Wilton, Army's 6'2" freshman, paced the Black Knights' offense with 16 kills and a scorching .609 hitting percentage (16-2-23). Karyn Powell doled out a match-best 35 assists for the visitors and completed a double-double with 10 digs.
Patriot League action returns to Kirby Sports Center tomorrow, as the Leopards host Holy Cross. First serve against the Crusaders - who were swept at Lehigh this evening, sit at 10-17 overall and 2-6 in league play.
