EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's soccer team picked up three crucial points on Senior Day at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium, downing Patriot League foe Bucknell in overtime by a score of 2-1. Senior B.J. Glenn netted the game-winner for the Leopards, and senior Sam Feldbaum assisted on both Lafayette goals.
With its first victory over the Bison in five meetings, Lafayette remains in the hunt for a Patriot League Tournament berth. The Leopards, who are 7-6-3 overall with a 2-3-1 league mark, will need a Colgate win or draw at Navy later tonight to stay alive entering the regular-season finale against the Mids on Nov. 6. The loss drops the Bison to 7-7-2 on the season with a 2-2-2 tally in the patriot League.
Glenn's goal came just 2:13 into overtime. Feldbaum got his head on a 50/50 ball, which Glenn ran down and then drove past Bison goalkeeper Marc Hartman. The 2009 All-Patriot Second Team honoree found the back of the net for the first time in 2010 after scoring a team-high six goals in each of the last two campaigns.
Lafayette opened the scoring off of a set piece in the 20th minute. Senior Justin Kamine took a free kick following a Bucknell foul, presenting the ball to Feldbaum in the box. Feldbaum headed the ball to freshman Jeff McLaughlin, who redirected it to beat Hartman and give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
The goal was the second of the season for McLaughlin, while Kamine picked up his second assist. Feldbaum notched assists number three and four with his pair of helpers.
The equalizer for the Bison came in the 74th minute. Lafayette senior goalkeeper Andrew Pianko left the net to challenge a Bucknell threat. While Pianko disrupted the charge, he was still out of position as Brendan Burgdorf found Tommy McCabe, who sent the ball into the open net to knot the score at 1-1.
Pianko made three saves in the win, as well as numerous strong challenges on Bucknell's eight corner kicks. His most spectacular save came on a point-blank attempt from Luke Joyner in the 79th minute that would have given the Bison a 2-1 lead.
Seniors Feldbaum, Glenn, Kamine, Stephen Macurdy and Pianko were honored prior to the match for their four years of service to the Lafayette men's soccer program. The quintet has been a part of 35 Leopard victories to date, including a 21-8-4 record at Oaks Stadium. The five exceptional student-athletes also boast a cumulative grade-point average above 3.00 and have combined for seven Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selections.
The Leopards will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 2, as intra-state rival Penn State - a team that has previously earned a national ranking this season - visits College Hill. The contest, which will be streamed live via LSN All-Access, is slated for a 7 p.m. start. LSN's Matt Panto along with Lafayette women's soccer head coach Mick Statham will have the call beginning at 6:55 p.m.
