EASTON, Pa. - Riding the momentum of Friday night's comeback win over Navy, the Lafayette volleyball team turned in one of its best showing of 2010 in Saturday's season finale. Unfortunately for the Leopards, their opponent was powerhouse American, the regular season champions of the Patriot League. Lafayette nearly took a set from the Eagles - a feat that only five teams have accomplished this season - but ultimately fell by set scores of 25-14, 25-23 and 25-9.
The Leopards close out 2010 with a record of 5-23 overall and 1-13 in the Patriot League. American, which will host next weekend's league tournament, improves to 27-2 overall and wraps up a perfect Patriot League regular season at 14-0.
Senior co-captain Kayly Elmer had a five kills in the final match of her career, rounding out her career total at 1,183 kills - good for second place all-time in Lafayette history. Elmer also had a team-high eight digs. Fellow senior co-captain Katrina Racibarskas had four kills to solidify her fourth-place total at 930 career finishers.
Freshman Karissa Ciliento led the Leopards with seven kills. Junior Alana Taylor had four kills and sophomore Alexandra Russo had one. Sophomore Sarah Frohnapfel also added a kill alongside her 19 assists from the setter spot.
In the back row, junior Christy Mebust tallied seven digs, and freshman libero Mackenzie Larsen notched five. Taylor and Frohnapfel each had a hand in four blocks to pace the Lafayette effort at the net.
The Eagles were led by 12 kills from Magdalena Teikel and 10 from Angelina Waterman. Alexandra Hammer and Krysta Cicala split the setting duties and delivered 19 and 11 assists, respectively. Libero Deborah Frantz led all players with nine digs.
Prior to the match, the Leopards recognized Elmer and Racibarskas for their service to the program. The pair of four-year starters combined for 2,173 kills and 1,126 digs in their careers. Both rank in the all-time top 10 in sets played in Maroon and White.
