PRINCETON, N.J. - The Lafayette women's basketball team rode a three-game winning streak into Princeton on Monday night, but the host Tigers, who were on a three-game run of their own, bested the Leopards by a score of 90-58. Senior co-captain LaKeisha Wright had a team-best 15 points for Lafayette.
The Leopards, who were playing their third game in five days, fall to 5-6 with the loss. Defending Ivy League champion Princeton improves to 7-2 on the season.
Joining Wright in double figures for Lafayette were senior co-captain Elizabeth Virgin and freshman Danielle Fiacco, who tallied 10 points apiece. Fiacco, who was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week earlier in the day, also hauled in a game-high eight rebounds. Junior Sarah McGorry had six boards as the Leopards were uncharacteristically outworked on the glass, 33-29.
The story of the game was Princeton's All-Ivy forward, Niveen Rasheed. The reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year scored 22 of her game-high 28 points in the first half as the Tigers took a 52-27 lead into the intermission. The Leopards played a much stronger second period, but the game was well at hand for the home team, who coasted to a 90-58 win.
Fellow All-Ivy players Devona Allgood and Lauren Edwards scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, for Princeton. Allgood, who also shared the team high of six rebounds with Rasheed, shot 7-for-7 from the field in 21 minutes of work.
The Leopards shot a solid 42.9 percent from the floor, but took only 42 shots to the Tigers' 69 - of which they connected on 37 for a 53.6 percent shooting day. Lafayette committed 25 turnovers which led to 39 Princeton points and also surrendered 16 fast-break tallies.
Lafayette will spend the next two weeks away from the court to focus on final exams. After the holidays, the Leopards will play a pair in Philadelphia at the St. Joseph's Hawk Classic. Lafayette challenges Quinnipiac on Dec. 28 and then meets either New Hampshire or the host Hawks on Dec. 29.
