WEST POINT, N.Y. - Lafayette used a ninth-inning sac fly off the bat of A.J. Pisarri to break a 7-7 tie and steal an 8-7 win from Army in game two of the four-game series. The Black Knights came away with an 11-2 win in the series opener on Saturday in West Point.
Lafayette (8-26, 4-10) rallied after the 11-2 loss to take game two for its fourth league win of the spring.
Game two starter Corey Shea went five innings and gave up five runs on 10 hits before giving way to the bullpen. Reliever Jack Rems lasted three full innings and gave up two runs, only one of which was earned, before closer Jeff Snell came in and shut down Army to pick up his fourth save of the spring.
Offensively, A.J. Miller and Pisarri both had three-hit efforts in the 8-7 win with Pisarri also driving in two runs, including the game winner.
The Black Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning thanks for four hits. Ben Koenigsfeld knocked a one-out triple to right field and scored on J.T. Watkins's double. Watkins sent home another run with a RBI single and Zach Price had Army's second double of the inning that made it 3-0.
The Leopards responded in the best possible way--with a five-run fourth inning. Justin Shepherd came through with the inning's biggest hit, a bases-clearing double to right center that tied the game at three. Scott Kelleher sent Shepherd home with a RBI single and Bobby Fargnoli's two out single scored Pisarri, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
It remained 5-3 until the fifth when Army put up a two-spot against Rems with Price driving home both runs.
In the seventh, Lafayette regained a 7-5 lead thanks to Miller's RBI double and Pisarri's RBI single.
The Leopards could not hold onto that lead as Army used a two-run eighth to tie the game at seven. David Darnell led off with a single and came around to score on a sac bunt by Steve May. Price later scored on a double play.
The game did not stay tied for long. With one out in the ninth, Kelleher singled up the middle and Miller followed with another single to send Kelleher to third. Pisarri was up next and flied out to left field, allowing Kelleher to score the go-ahead run.
Snell pitched a one-two-three ninth to clinch the win.
Lafayette was not as lucky in the series opener. Starter Zach Fritz was knocked around for seven runs on nine hits and lasted only 2.1 innings. Reliever Jeremy Atkins fared only slightly better, surrendering four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
The Leopards had only six hits in the game, led by Matt Fenster's 2-for-3 performance. Fargnoli drove in one of the two runs with a solo homer, the first of his career.
Fenster gave Lafayette a 1-0 first inning lead on a RBI single to left field but Lafayette left two base runners stranded, keeping it 1-0.
Army then used a three-run second inning and four-run third and fourth innings to effectively put the game out of reach. Koenigsfeld had a three-run shot in the third and finished the game with three hits and four RBI.
Darnell had a leadoff home run in the fourth for one of his two hits in the game.
The series concludes tomorrow with another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
