EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's soccer team kicked off their 2010 campaign with a 2-1 double overtime win against Wagner on a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon.
The Leopards came out strong against the Seahawks, at the 36 minute mark Lauren Smedley's free kick made its way through the Seahawk defense and found its way to senior midfielder Olivia Hawes. Hawes took the shot on goal but it was stopped by Wagner's Katie Marcy.
Lafayette and Wagner exchanged shots going into a scoreless half.
A little more than three minutes into the second half the ball found Janelle Pierson who passed it to Hawes up the middle and she found the back of the net to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
Under the two minutes mark Lafayette committed a foul that brought Wagner's Katie Keown up for a penalty kick that just made it past Smedley to tie up the game and send it into the seasons first overtime.
Less the two minutes left of the clock in the first overtime, Smedley made the save of the game stopping the shot from the Seahawks Julie Vigliotti bringing the game into double overtime.
Jill Dozier found the ball from Pierson, and found an empty place in the net and kicked around Marcey for the game-winning goal.
"I was very happy with the outcome of this first game," head coach Mick Statham said. "I am pleased with all the hard work the team put in during the preseason and it showed out on the field today."
The Leopards are back in action on Tuesday when they head to Philadelphia for a match-up with La Salle at 7 p.m.
