EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette volleyball team got another strong performance from senior co-captain Kayly Elmer on day two of the Lafayette College Invitational, but the Leopards fell to both visiting Quinnipiac (3-0, 25-21, 25-16, 25-10) and Delaware State (3-1, 21-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-23) to wrap up the weekend tournament.
Lafayette, which downed La Salle last night to open their final non-Patriot League tournament of 2010, closes out the weekend at 4-8. Quinnipiac now sits 2-10 and Delaware State - the only team to win two matches on the weekend - moves to 4-9.
Elmer led all players in the tournament with an average of 3.36 kills per set in 11 frames of work. On Saturday, she led Lafayette in both matches with seven kills against Quinnipiac and 16 kills in four sets against the Hornets. She rounded out a double-double against Delaware State - her fourth of 10 - with 14 digs. Elmer, the fourth-most prolific attacker in Lafayette history with 1,048 career kills, is just 24 finishers shy of the third-place position held by her former teammate Michelle Donohue '08 (1,072 kills).
Junior Alana Taylor had 12 kills on Saturday, and freshman Karissa Ciliento added eight. Ciliento, who posted a double-double on Friday against La Salle, landed seven aces in seven sets on Saturday. Her nine aces overall in the tournament led all players.
The defense effort was fronted by freshman Mackenzie Larsen, who averaged 4.43 digs per set against the Bobcats and Hornets. Elmer posted 3.14 digs per set and junior Christy Mebust notched 2.29 digs per frame to shore up the back row.
The Leopards will travel to Riverdale, N.Y. on Wednesday to meet Manhattan at 7 p.m. in their final non-league match prior to the start of Patriot League play. The League slate begins on Friday, Sept. 24 at Holy Cross at 7 p.m.
