HAMILTON, N.Y. - Colgate's upset of Army in the 2010 Patriot League Tournament is looking less surprising as the 2011 season unfolds. The Lafayette volleyball team experienced this first-hand on Saturday in Hamilton, falling to the host Raiders, 3-0.
The Leopards now stand at 7-9 overall with an 0-4 record in league play. Colgate moves to 6-10 on the season and 3-1 in the Patriot League.
Kaitlynn Zoller led the Lafayette hitting corps with seven kills (7-2-13, .385), and Danielle Towslee added five (5-2-9, .333). Katy Rooney had four kills, Camissa Beghou pounded three and Alexandra Russo and Karissa Ciliento rounded out the offense with two finishers apiece. Setter Sarah Frohnapfel ran the Lafayette offense for the final two sets and dished out 13 assists.
Libero Christy Mebust had six of Lafayette's 30 digs, while Frohnapfel contributed five from the back row. Senior Alana Taylor led the way at the net with a hand in two of the Leopards' three blocks. Mebust landed the lone service ace for the Maroon and White.
As a team, Lafayette hit .021 (23-21-95) compared to a .194 (39-20-98) showing for Colgate. The home team also led the way in blocks, 7-3, and aces, 7-1.
Heading the Raiders' attack was Lindsay Young, who was the only player to notch double-digit kills with 11. Kaylee Fifer doled out 29 assists for Colgate, and Lexi Finger had a match-best 10 digs.
The Leopards are back in action on Friday, traveling to nearby Bethlehem, Pa. to meet their historic rival, Lehigh. First serve from Leeman-Turner Arena is slated for 7 p.m. Lafayette returns to Kirby Sports Center on the following Friday, Oct. 14, for a 7 p.m. meeting with defending league champion American.
