COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Lafayette women's basketball team dropped its opening contest at the 2011 Terrapin Classic, falling to host Maryland - the No. 5 ranked team in the nation - by a score of 84-36. Emily Homan led all scorers, matching her career high of 13 points for the Leopards.
With the loss, Lafayette falls to 4-8 on the season. The Leopards will meet the loser of this evening's matchup between East Carolina and No. 19/20 Delaware in the consolation game tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. The Terrapins remain unbeaten at 12-0. Maryland is the Leopards' highest-ranked opponent since Dec. 7, 1990, when Lafayette challenged No. 1 Virginia.
Homan added four rebounds to her game-high scoring output. Samantha Jordan came off the bench and contributed eight points and six boards. Kristan Liddle and Linnel Macklin each added four points, Madeline Fahan chipped in with three, and Danielle Fiacco and Brya Freeland rounded out the offense with two points apiece. Liddle dished out a team-high three assists.
The Leopards were outworked on the glass, 55-29, by the nation's top rebounding team. The Terrapins posted 17 second-chance points as well as 28 points off of 22 Lafayette turnovers.
Lafayette was held without a field goal for the first 7:06 of the contest as Maryland raced out to an 18-2 lead. Though the Leopards began to find their stride offensively at that point, the Terrapins stayed hot from the floor. The nationally-ranked home team concluded the half with a 23-2 stretch to enter the locker room with a 51-13 advantage.
The second-half was a much more balanced affair, with the Leopards outscored just 33-23 over the final 20 minutes, but the Terrapins proved to be too strong as they rolled to an 84-36 victory.
Brene Moseley led five Maryland players in double figures with 12 points. Tianna Hawkins posted a double-double for the home team with 10 points and a game-best 13 rebounds.
