Lafayette Looks for Third Straight Win

EASTON, Pa.- The Leopards (10-14, 5-4), who have won two straight and three of their last four, travel to Navy (8-17, 3-6) for a Saturday night matchup. The Mids have dropped their last two (Bucknell and Lehigh). Lafayette goes for the season sweep, previously beating Navy 76-73 on Jan. 15 in Easton.

The Leopards (5-4) sit alone in third place in the Patriot League standings behind Bucknell (8-1) and American (6-3). Holy Cross and Lehigh rest a game behind Lafayette, while Navy, Army and Colgate are tied for sixth.

Lafayette tied its season-high with 13 three-pointers at Colgate (matching the mark from the double-overtime game at FDU on Jan. 2). Rob Delaney led the way with three three-pointers while Tony Johnson, Jim Mower, Ben Wheeler and Levi Giese each had two apiece. Lafayette shot 13-of-22 on the night.

The Midshipmen are 6-17 overall and 3-5 in Patriot League play, tied for sixth place in the conference standings. In the first round of conference play, Navy beat Army, American and Colgate. The Mids have dropped the first two games of round two, losing to Bucknell (75-49) and Lehigh (87-72).

Senior guard O.J. Avworo runs the club, averaging 8.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. Junior Jordan Sugars is the Navy's leading scorer (15.7 ppg) and rebounder (5.9 rpg). He has made a team-best 52 three-pointers. Senior Greg Brown (10.3 ppg, 3.6 rpg) and freshman Isaiah Roberts (6.2 ppg, 2.1 rpg) have spent significant time (14 and 16 games, respectively) in the starting lineup as well.

The Mids feature a mix of youth and experience in the frontcourt. Freshman forward J.J. Avila is averaging 12.0 ppg and 5.3 rpg, having started 14 games including all nine conference games. Senior forward Romeo Garcia (3.9 ppg, 2.8 rpg) has started 16 games while averaging 23 minutes per game. Senior center Mark Veazey (5.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg) has started 13 games.
