WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Lafayette women's basketball team was unable to capitalize on a strong defense effort on Wednesday night, falling to Patriot League foe Army, 58-36, at West Point. The Leopards numerous heaves as the shot clock expired in addition to 12 Black Knights' turnovers but committed 18 miscues of their own which led to 17 Army points.
With the loss, Lafayette falls to 11-17 overall and 4-9 in the Patriot League. Army improves to 13-14 on the season with a 7-6 league tally.
Senior co-captain LaKeisha Wright carried the Leopards offensively with a game-high 16 points. Wright, who shot 8-for-8 from the free throw line, moved passed Terri Dadio '92 and into sixth place all-time at Lafayette with 1,289 career points.
Junior Sarah McGorry had a team-best eight rebounds as the Leopards were edged on the glass, 37-35.
Three straight Lafayette points to run the score to 7-4 was the last time that the Leopards would be within one possession of Army. The Black Knights ran off a 14-0 run as Lafayette went 9:59 without a field goal. Though the Leopards finished the first half strong with 10 points after the final media timeout, they still went into the locker room trailing, 28-16.
While solid play on the defensive end kept Lafayette afloat in the first half, turnovers caught up with the Maroon and White after the intermission. The Leopards managed just one field goal attempt compared to five turnovers in their first six possessions out of the locker room as Army ran its lead to 20 points at 39-19. The deficit grew as large as 31 as the Black Knights closed out a 58-36 victory. Twelve of Wright's 16 points came after halftime, but 11 Lafayette turnovers in the period prevented the Leopards from making the run.
Lafayette caps the 2010-11 regular season on Saturday with a trip of American. Tip-off from Bender Arena is slated for 2 p.m.
