WORCESTER, Mass. - One run was all it took on Saturday afternoon for the Lafayette women's basketball team to fall at Holy Cross. The Crusaders' 23-0 stretch over 7:54 put the Leopards away in an eventual 83-46 decision at the Hart Center. Senior co-captain LaKeisha Wright scored a team-best 13 points to move into seventh on the program's all-time scoring list.
With the loss, Lafayette falls to 9-14 overall and 2-6 in Patriot League play. Holy Cross moves to 8-15 on the season with an even 4-4 league tally.
Nine of Wright's 13 points came after halftime, as she shot 5-for-12 from the field and 3-for-5 from the free throw line. She now has 1,235 career points, surpassing Tiffany Bedics '99 (1,223) on the all-time list.
As a team, the Leopards shot 28.8 percent (17-59) from the floor, 10 percent (1-10) from three-point range and 61.1 percent (11-18) from the stripe. Senior co-captain Elizabeth Virgin tallied 10 points and six rebounds for Lafayette, and sophomore Samantha Jordan contributed seven points and seven boards.
Lafayette was outrebounded, 50-30. The Leopards did win the turnover battle, 22-21, but Holy Cross was more opportunistic with 27 points-off-turnovers to Lafayette's 19.
The Leopards started the game on a 9-2 run, but Holy Cross quickly responded to knot the score at 11-11. A 12-3 gave the Crusaders a 14-point lead at 34-20, which Lafayette would trim to 10 points and 36-26 with 2:15 remaining in the half. The Leopards failed to score again in the half, as Holy Cross scored the final seven points to enter the intermission holding a 43-26 lead.
The spurt continued to start the second half, with Lafayette going scorless for the first 5:39. The Holy Cross run grew to 23-0 in total, spotting the home team a commanding 59-26 advantage. The Crusaders would go on the lead by as many as 39 points en route to an 83-46 victory.
The Crusaders' Alex Smith led all players with 20 points, while Whitney Fremeau and Amy Lepley joined her in double figures with 12 and 11 tallies, respectively. Holy Cross shot 52.5 percent (31-59) from the field, 38.9 percent (7-18) from downtown and 60.9 percent (14-23) from the free throw line.
The Leopards return to College Hill on Wednesday, Feb. 9 to host Colgate. The action from Kirby Sports Center is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Lafayette Sports Network (RCN-4, RCN-8, WBPH-60) and LSN All-Access.
