EASTON, Pa. - Four players scored in double figures for the Lafayette women's basketball team on Wednesday, as the Leopards cruised to a 65-42 Patriot League win over Colgate at Kirby Sports Center. Junior Sarah McGorry recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while senior co-captain LaKeisha Wright led all scorers with 13 points.
With the win, the Leopards improve to 10-14 overall and 3-6 in Patriot League play. The 23-point margin of victory is the largest for Lafayette since a 76-49 win over Colgate in Hamilton on Jan. 31, 2001. The Leopards had not won at Kirby Sports Center by 23 points or more since a Jan. 25, 1997 thrashing of Army, 79-50. Colgate drops to 7-16 overall and 2-7 in league play.
Wright and McGorry were joined in double figures by senior co-captains Lauren Jackson and Elizabeth Virgin, who each tallied 12 points. Wright rounded out her evening with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Sophomore Samantha Jordan added nine points and five rebounds, while freshman Madeline Fahan came off the bench to contribute six points and five boards. As a team, the Leopards shot 45.3 percent (24-53) from the field, 33.3 percent (5-15) from three-point range and 70.6 percent (12-17) from the free throw line.
Lafayette outrebounded Colgate, 41-33, led by McGorry's 10 rips. Defensively, the Leopards forced 21 turnovers while committing 22, but the Maroon and White were far more opportunistic with Colgate's miscues, posting 22 points-off-turnovers to the Raiders' eight. Colgate shot 26.4 percent (14-53) for the game, converting just three field goals in the second half. The visitors were also just 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) from downtown and 12-for-19 (63.2 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Leopards led wire-to-wire, starting out on an 8-2 run over the opening 5:26 of the game. Colgate cut the deficit to two points at 10-8, but the score would never be within one possession again. Seven straight points from Jackson - including a four-point play - capped a 15-0 run that spotted Lafayette a comfortable 25-8 advantage with 7:30 to go in the half. The offense continued to click en route to posting a season-best 44 points in the period, sending the Leopards into the locker room with a 44-28 edge.
Playing a consistent 40 minutes has been a challenge for the Leopards this season, but the home team erased all thoughts of a Colgate rally with a 14-2 run to start the second half. The lead grew as large as 28 points - and never dipped below 20 - the rest of the way as Lafayette allowed just 14 second-half points in a 65-42 win.
Krista Moser was the lone Raider in double figures with 10 points. The Leopards held Jhazmine Lynch and Tayler Wejnert, who were averaging a combined 25.2 points per game entering the day, to five total points on 0-for-19 shooting from the field.
The Leopards return to the court on Saturday as Patriot League-leader Navy (14-9, 7-2 PL) visits Kirby Sports Center for a 1 p.m. contest. Lafayette will celebrate its annual WBCA PinkZone game with all of the action airing live on the Lafayette Sports Network (RCN-4, RCN-8, WBPH-60) and LSN All-Access (GoLeopards.com).
