PHILADELPHIA - Ryan Dodds buried his first career goal in the 81th minute to lead the Lafayette men's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Drexel on Wednesday night. The Leopards' defense - with senior Graham Heydt in goal - notched its third straight shutout in the victory.
With the win, the Leopards move to 4-1-1. Lafayette is unbeaten in its last four contests. The Dragons remain winless at 0-4-0.
Dodds' tally was assisted by Alec Golini, who notched the first point of his career with the helper. The Leopards managed two shots on goal, with junior Sean Peckham beating the goalkeeper but ultimately being turned away by a sprawling Drexel defender.
Lafayette was outshot, 10-7, but Heydt (2-1-1) turned away all four of the Dragons' strikes on goal. The senior goalkeeper lowered his goals-against average to 0.47 with his second clean sheet of the season. Heydt's fourth save was the most dramatic, as he stopped a Ken Tribbett effort with just 75 seconds remaining to preserve the 1-0 lead. Drexel's Pussinen Pentt (0-4-0) did not make a save in the losing effort.
Sophomore Brandon Turner and freshman Julian Plummer, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, both played all 90 minutes to anchor the shutout effort by the defense.
Lafayette will play one more match prior to Patriot League play, traveling to Harrisonburg, Va. to meet James Madison on Saturday, Sept. 17. Navy visits Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium on Sept. 24 to open league play.
