Army Bests Volleyball, 3-0

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette volleyball team hosted Army on Saturday afternoon at Kirby Sports Center, dropping the Patriot League contest to the Black Knights, 3-0. Junior Alexandra Russo had a team-best seven kills for the Leopards, who got finishers from eight different players in the match.

With the loss, Lafayette falls to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League. Army improves upon the League's best overall record at 11-4 and moves to 2-0 in Patriot League action - having downed Lehigh, 3-1, on Friday evening.

Joining Russo among the Leopards' offensive leaders was freshman Danielle Towslee, who notched six kills with a .385 (6-1-13) hitting percentage. The rookie middle added three digs and had a hand in four of Lafayette's seven team blocks. Fellow freshman Camissa Beghou also had four blocks and chipped in four kills on the offensive end. Freshman Katy Rooney recorded three kills, junior Sarah Frohanpfel had two, and sophomores Karissa Ciliento and Molly Belcher posted one finisher apiece to round out the Lafayette attack. Belcher served as the primary setter for the Maroon and White and dished out 20 assists.

Senior libero Christy Mebust led the back row with 13 digs. Freshman Melanie Weiss added nine, and Frohnapfel posted six digs in one set of work. Russo, junior Kaitlynn Zoller and freshman Michelle Woodworth each had five digs.

The Leopards landed four service aces to Army's three, with Belcher landing a pair and Weiss and Towslee deliver one each.

Army's Ariana Mankus led all players with 17 kills. She completed a double-double with 12 digs. Mary Vaccaro also tallied a double-double with 39 assists and 13 digs, while D.J. Phee led the Black Knights' back row with 16 digs.

Lafayette will look to turn things around on a three-match Patriot League road swing. The Leopards visit Bucknell and Colgate next weekend, then square off with Lehigh on Oct. 7 in Bethlehem. The court at Kirby Sports Center will see its next action on Friday, Oct. 14 with a visit from the defending league champion, American.
