EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's soccer team earned its third consecutive shutout to start the season, defeating Saint Peter's College, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in Jersey City, N.J. Freshman Jaclyn Giordano scored the lone goal in the match for the Leopards, who improve to 3-0 on the year.
"It was an excellent team performance again today, in difficult conditions," said head coach Mick Statham. "It was very hot outside and the players did a terrific job finding a way to win the game. I'm pleased with a 3-0 week."
Giordano's tally beat the Peahens' keeper Caitlin Hoffer in the 31st minute and was the first goal of her career. Lafayette goalkeeper Lauren Smedley was credited with the assist after Girodano ran onto a goal kick and finished the chance on the other end, putting the Maroon and White ahead.
In addition to the assist, Smedley earned her third clean sheet of 2011, turning away five shots in the match. The shutout is the 15th of Smedley's career and the junior extended her shutout streak to 289 consecutive minutes.
Lafayette outshot Saint Peter's (0-3-1) 9-6 in the game, but SPC held a slight edge in corner kicks, 7-6.
The Leopards continue their six game road swing on Sept. 9 when they travel to Staten Island, N.Y. to play Wagner at 4:00 p.m.
