EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's soccer team lost its first game of the season Friday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Wagner in Staten Island, N.Y. The Leopards (3-1) surrendered their first goal of the season in the match, which gave the Seahawks (4-0-1) the win.
"I was a little disappointed with our overall performance today, head coach Mick Statham said. "I thought we lacked a little bit of an edge and we weren't as sharp as we had been the last couple games. The players will recover tomorrow and we'll get back at it on Sunday. It will be a good test of our teams' character to see how we respond to some adversity."
After going into the half scoreless, Wagner broke the deadlock when Alyssa Grecco beat Lauren Smedley with a left-footed strike from the corner of the penalty area. The goal was Grecco's first of the year and Julie Vigliotti was credited with the assist.
Smedley made five saves in the loss and Wagner's Kate Marcy turned away seven goal scoring attempts en route to a shutout victory. Jill Dozier put three shots on goal and Julia Bell had two in the game for the Maroon and White.
In addition to Wagner's 11-7 shots advantage, the Seahawks also held the slight edge in corner kicks, 3-2.
Lafayette continues its six game road trip in Newark, N.J. when the Leopards play N.J.I.T. at 1 p.m.
