EASTON, Pa. - As part of rivalry weekend on College Hill, the Lafayette men's and women's swimming teams took on Lehigh on Friday night at Ruef Natatorium.
The Lehigh women edged the Leopards 169-125 while the Mountain Hawk men claimed a 172-126 decision. "Both teams swam well, each winning some events," said Leopard head coach Jim Dailey. "The atmosphere at the meeting was outstanding and everyone did amazing. Several swam and dove best times or posted their best scores. There were improvements in every event and almost to a person."
"We are looking forward to the next two months of training and getting ready for Patriot League Championships," Dailey continued. "We will see them again."
The Leopard women swept the 50 free with Megan Kaveney securing first place with a time of 24.63. Kelsey Theriault (25.38) and Lauren Berry (25.43) took second and third. Kaveney and Berry finished second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard free style.
Jane Kuntz won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:00.29. Lafayette swept the one-meter and three-meter diving events. Arielle Blumenthal (161.70: 1-meter, 173.70: 3-meter) won both events followed by Stephanie Roebelen and Robyn Henderek.
For the Lafayette men, Greg Grewal swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100 (1:00.23) and 200 (2:12.81). Evan Newbold swam to a first-place finish the 100-backstroke, clocking a time of 54:32 while also finishing third in the 200-yard back.
Christopher Wickwire touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly in 52.63 and was second in the 200 fly (1:58.81). Wickwire, Newbold and Grewal joined Robert Lowery on the winning 400-yard medley team. The Leopards beat out the second-place Lehigh team by 38 hundredths of a second.
Todd Leone won the men's three-meter diving event with a score of 254.92.
The next competition Lafayette will face will be on its winter training trip to Plantation, Fla. in January.
