COLUMBUS, Ohio - Making their longest trip of the season to Columbus, Ohio, the Lafayette women's basketball team could not bring home a victory, falling to No. 20 Ohio State on Sunday afternoon, 81-41.
Junior co-captain Danielle Fiacco was just two rebounds shy of her sixth double-double of the season, recording eight boards to go along with her 10 points. The other members of the captaincy contingent for Lafayette, senior Alicia Manning and sophomore Emily Homan each added six points in the defeat.
Ohio State shot a scintillating 56.4 percent from the field, going 9-of-17 from three-point range (52.9 %). Taylor Hill led all scorers with 19, while Amber Stokes and Ashley Adams also finished in double figures with 15 and 10, respectively. On the other side, Lafayette made just 14-of-52 shots from the floor (26.9%) and knocked down four of its 12 three-point attempts (33.3%). On the bright side, the Leopards did make nine of their 11 shots from the charity stripe (81.8%).
Lafayette's offensive issues began from the opening tip as multiple missed chances and three turnovers led to a 5-0 deficit early. Fiacco finally came through three minutes into the contest with a nifty five-foot jumper to put the Leopards on the board.
The entirety of the first half was controlled by the Buckeyes as every shot from the Lafayette end was highly contested. Offensively, Ohio State racked up 38 points on 14-of-28 shooting (50.0%). The Buckeyes held the Leopards to just 16 points in the opening stanza and took the 38-16 lead into the break.
Coming out in the second half, Ohio State continued its impressive shooting performance, taking a 47-20 lead into the 16-minute media timeout. The Buckeyes went 17-for-27 (63.0%) in the second half and made six of their nine shot attempts from distance (66.7%).
All members of both squads got into the game, as freshman Jazmin Hayes scored her first points as a Leopard at the 11:53 mark. It was fitting that Hayes, a Cincinnati, Ohio native, recorded her first career points in front of a somewhat hometown crowd as Cincinnati is approximately two hours from the arena. Classmate Morgan Miller saw her first minutes in the Maroon and White as well, getting three minutes of action off the bench in the second half.
In the end, the 20th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes proved to be too much for the Leopards, sending them back to Easton with an 81-41 loss. Lafayette moves to 3-7 on the season and hosts Saint Francis (N.Y.) on Dec. 21 at Kirby Sports Center at 7 p.m.
