NEW YORK, N.Y. - Sophomore co-captain Emily Homan recorded a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds and the Lafayette women's basketball team survived a late surge to defeat Columbia in New York, N.Y. on Wednesday evening, 49-47. Homan, who suffered a freak injury in warm-ups as she got hit with a ball, did not start, but played 28 minutes for the Leopards in the victory.
Sophomore guard Linnel Macklin notched 10 points in the contest on 4-of-6 shooting and 2-of-2 from the three-point line. Junior co-captain Danielle Fiacco tallied eight points and four rebounds, while sophomore point guard Brya Freeland added six assists.
The Leopards went 21-of-54 from the field (38.9%) and committed just 12 turnovers, but knocked down only four of their 11 free-throw attempts (36.4%). On the other side, Columbia shot 17-for-63 from the floor (27%) and Brittany Simmons led the Lions with 16 points and 10 boards. Columbia out-rebounded the Leopards, 47-36.
Lafayette began with junior Kelly Loughney tabbing the game's first points off a layup from the left side. Starting for the aforementioned Homan, Loughney finished with two points and two rebounds in 12 minutes of action.
Missed chances were the story throughout the first half as a number of layups down low were missed from the Lafayette frontcourt. Columbia's energy on the offensive glass led to numerous second-chance opportunities, but the Leopards held strong defensively, giving up only five second-chance points throughout the game.
Columbia's Sarah Mead hit two acrobatic three-pointers late in the half and the Leopards went into the locker room trailing by two, 29-27.
Coming out in the second stanza, it was evident that the Leopards talked about taking advantage of the low-post game during the break. A perfectly designed feed to Fiacco on the low block and an easy lay-up tied the game at 29 less than a minute into the second half.
Lafayette would go on to score the first six points before a third three from Columbia's Mead brought the Lions within one at 33-32. Macklin answered, though, as she knocked down a trey from the left wing and put the Leopards up four, 36-32, with 17:11 on the clock.
A pair of controversial calls led to Columbia buckets toward the middle of the half as the Lions cut the lead to four at 39-35 with 12:05 to play. A lay-up from the Lions' Diana Lee with 7:29 remaining forced a timeout from head coach Dianne Nolan as Columbia took a three-point lead, 46-43.
The Lions held that lead until the 3:18 mark, when Emily Homan's lay-in put Lafayette on top by one, 47-46. Macklin's feed to Fiacco with 1:53 remaining put the Leopards up by two for good, 49-47. Columbia was able to get off a half-court shot at the buzzer that ricocheted off the front of the rim and gave Lafayette the victory.
The Leopards begin Patriot League play on Sunday as they travel to Annapolis, Md. to take on Navy at noon.
