West Point, N.Y. - Lafayette dropped a 3-0 decision to Army in West Point, N.Y. on Friday night. The Leopards dropped to 9-8, 1-5 in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights improved to 5-1 in league play and 8-9 overall.
The Leopards were led by Karissa Ciliento's eight kills and Samantha Volk's 28 assists. Danielle Towslee, Brianne Giangiobbe and Katy Rooney all had seven kills apiece. Lauren Pisauro had a team-high 19 digs, while Rooney and Giangiobbe each had a pair of blocks. Army was powered by Megan Wilton and Margaux Jarka with 14 and 12 kills respectively.
With the score tied 4-4 in the first set, Army went on a 8-3 run to take control of the game. The Leopards worked back into the set, as a kill from Towslee cut the lead to 17-14. Kills from Giangiobbe, Ciliento and Rooney pulled Lafayette within one, 21-20, but the Black Knights took the next four points to win the set.
The Leopards took an early 6-4 lead in the second game courtesy of two Giangiobbe kills. Army came storming back and took a 10-8 lead, forcing a Lafayette timeout. Out of the timeout, Rooney smashed a kill to cut the lead to one, but Army went on to win the set, 25-16.
Army jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set, and forced the Leopards to fight their way back into the set. A kill from Rooney cut the Black Knights lead to one, 3-2, but Army pushed its lead to 16-10. Ciliento hit two kills late in the set to pull the Leopards within four at 19-15 and 20-16. The Black Knights closed out the set, 25-19.
The Leopards take on Holy Cross tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Worcester, Mass. The game will be available on the Patriot League Network.
