Newark, N.J. - Lafayette used a 7-0 spurt to start the game and never looked back. The Leopards led throughout earning a 61-45 victory over NJIT on Thursday night. The Maroon and White were in control from the start and improved to 6-2 this season.
Emily Homan scored a game-high 18 points and Madeline Fahan chipped in with 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Maddie Peabody knocked down a pair of key threes and finished with eight points and a team-high four assists.
Lafayette jumped out to a quick 7-0 advantage, powered by four Homan points and a three-pointer from Maddie Peabody, forcing a NJIT timeout at the 18:14 mark. The Leopards pushed the lead to 24-16 with under seven minutes to play in the opening half.
The Highlanders trimmed the Lafayette lead, but the Leopards maintained the advantage and went into the break up, 27-22. Emily Homan led the Leopards with eight points in the first frame.
Homan picked up where she left off after the break, scoring the first six points for the Leopards to push the lead to 33-26. A driving layup from Madeline Fahan increased the advantage to nine, 35-26 at the 15 minute mark.
A three-pointer from Denisa Domiterova, followed by a Shakia Robinson layup cut the Lafayette lead to four, 37-33, with 12:54 to play, forcing the Leopards to burn a timeout. Brya Freeland knocked down a triple out of the timeout to stop the Highlander run.
Another drive and finish from Fahan on the next possession pushed the lead to nine, 42-33. A deep jumper from the baseline from Linnel Macklin gave the Leopards a double-digit edge, 44-33 midway through the second half.
The Leopards maintained a nine-point cushion, as they continued to lead 46-37 with under six minutes to play. Peabody's second three of the night pushed the Lafayette lead to 12, 49-37, with five minutes on the clock.
Lafayette forced a shot clock violation with two and a half minutes to play, and the Leopards were able to convert on the next possession. Fahan scored on another driving layup, was fouled and completed the three-point play to give the Maroon and White a 54-41 lead.
The Leopards were able to ice the game away at the free throw line over the last minute and a half, and came away with a 61-45 win over the Highlanders.
Lafayette returns home on Sunday, when the Leopards host Stony Brook at 2 p.m.
