EASTON, Pa. - Lehigh scored early and held on late to defeat the Lafayette women's soccer team on Wednesday evening at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium. Senior co-captain Jaclyn Giordano was the goal-scorer for the Leopards, assisted by juniors Allie Torru and Samantha Potoczak.

Just 11 minutes into the contest, it was Lehigh who provided the first scoring chance of the game. The ball was fed into the middle, finding the feet of a Lehigh forward at the top of the box. A strong shot looked goal-bound, but sophomore Danielle Sedillo had other ideas, stretching fully and extended an arm to block it away and cover it up.

Unfortunately, the Hawks beat Sedillo in the 23rd minute to take the early lead. After a long ball was sent into the box, Lehigh's Danielle Salans settled it and dropped a pass across the box to an open Grace Correll, who slotted it past Sedillo on the far side for the first goal.

Fifty-three minutes would go by before another scoring tally, again from the Hawks. Lehigh worked a foul across the middle of the field and set up for a free kick into the box from about 40 yards out. The service from Amanda Stratton found Correll again, who had worked her way behind the Lafayette back line, and the Lehigh forward connected with the header across the line for her second goal of the night.

Lafayette did not go down without a fight, though, as a marker in the 84th minute kept the game interesting down the stretch. Potoczak played a beautiful long low ball into the box, finding the feet of Torru. Torru instinctly flicked it on for Giordano, who pushed it past Lehigh's Ashley Blanks to cut the lead to one. However, that would be the end of the scoring for the night as the Hawks held on for a 2-1 victory.

Sedillo was excellent in the contest, recording four saves in defeat. The Hawks led the way in shots, 10-6, and worked the majority of the offensive chances with eight corner-kick opportunities compared to just one for the Leopards.

Lafayette will have another chance at its opening Patriot League victory at home on Saturday, hosting Holy Cross at 1 p.m.
