Easton, Pa. - For the second consecutive night, the Lafayette volleyball team battled for five sets, but the Leopards fell in the fifth to Army on Saturday night. Lafayette took visiting Army to a fifth set for the first time since 2005.
Jet Manzi finished with a double-double for the second match in a row, finishing with 11 kills and 15 digs. Lafayette (4-15, 1-6 PL) also received nine kills from Danielle Towslee, Katy Rooney and Tori Smith. Smith led the team with 20 assists, splitting time at setter with Samantha Volk who handed out 19 assists. Army (8-12, 4-4 PL) was led by Carolyn Bockrath and Nicole Perri with 17 kills, while Vanessa Edwards finished with 61 assists.
The Leopards jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the opening set on kills from Rooney, Towslee and Elizabeth Walsh. Army was able to tie the match a nine before a 7-2 spurt from the Leopards, highlighted by a pair of Towslee kills, a kill from Stevens and a block from the duo, to take a 16-11 lead. The Black Knights closed the gap to two, but a kill from Walsh finished the set, 25-21, for the Leopards.
Army ran out to a 13-4 lead in the second set and continued to lead throughout the set, taking the second set, 25-10. In the third set, Lafayette jumped out to a 5-1 lead on kills from Smith and Rooney. The Black Knights used a 13-7 run to take a 18-12 advantage. A 4-0 spurt from the Leopards on kills from Manzi and Rooney, followed by a Stevens ace cut the deficit to 18-16. That was as close as Lafayette got in the third, as Army took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-18 win.
The fourth set was a back and forth affair, as neither team was able to take a lead of more than three points. Trailing 18-15, Lafayette used a 4-1 run to tie the game at 19. A kill from Manzi and a block from Stevens and Smith gave the Leopards a 23-21 lead. With the set tied a 23, Smith gave Lafayette a 24-23 advantage with a kill, followed by an Army error, to take the fourth game, 25-23 and force a fifth set.
In the final set, Army jumped out to an 11-1 lead as Clay Amber had three kills and three aces. The Black Knights took the fifth set, 15-4 and won the match, 3-2.
Lafayette is back in action at Lehigh on Friday night.
