Hamilton, N.Y. – Lafayette dropped a 3-0 decision to Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon in Patriot League volleyball action. The Leopards were led by Elizabeth Walsh’s nine kills.
Lafayette fell to 4-17 overall and 1-8 in Patriot League play. The Raiders improved to 12-7 and 6-3 in conference play. Jet Manzi tallied six kills for the Leopards, while Tori Smith finished with 15 assists. Kathleen Harris led the Raiders with nine kills.
A block from Katherine Stevens and a kill from Walsh early on, tied the first set at four. A 10-2 run from Colgate pushed the Raiders ahead, 14-6 midway through the game. Colgate was able to maintain its lead the rest of the set, winning the opening frame 25-11.
The Leopards jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the second set. The run was highlighted by a pair of kills from Manzi, and service aces from Melanie Weiss and Danielle Towslee. The Raiders were able to close the gap and take the lead 17-15. The Leopards wouldn’t go away as back-to-back kills from Katy Rooney and Brianne Giangiobbe tied the set at 17. The Raiders pushed ahead 20-18, but again a pair of kills from Walsh and Towlsee evened the frame at 20. Another kill from Walsh gave Lafayette a 22-21 lead, but the Raiders would tally the next four points to take the set, 25-22.
Colgate ran out to a 10-2 lead in the third frame. Lafayette pulled to within six as back-to-back kills from Stevens made it 11-5. With the Raiders leading, 16-6, the Leopards received kills from Stevens and Walsh and a Samantha Volk ace to trim the lead to seven, 16-9. The Raiders would maintain their lead and take the third set, 25-15, and the match 3-0.
