LEWISBURG, Pa. - Derek Maurer hit a 33-yard field goal in overtime as Bucknell outlasted Lafayette, 27-24, on Saturday afternoon at Christy Matthewson Stadium.

The Bison had to rally to send the game to overtime. Back-up quarterback Trey Lauletta led an eight-play, 75-yard fourth-quarter drive that ended with a 12-yard TD toss to Jake Hartman. The score knotted the game at 24-24 with a minute to go in regulation.

In overtime, Lafayette had the ball first. The offense was assessed a false start penalty prior to the first play and then QB Drew Reed was sacked on the first play from scrimmage. On second down, he connected with Ross Scheuerman for a short gain, but was sacked again on third down. Lafayette had the ball 4^th-and-25 at the Bucknell 40. Reed's heave to Matt Mrazek in the end zone was broken up, despite an acrobatic effort by Mrazek.

When Bucknell (7-1, 3-0) took over in overtime, the Lafayette defense saw a steady diet of C.J. Williams, as he picked up seven, zero and two yards with Chris Brockman (10 tackles) in on all three stops. On 4^th-and-1, Maurer connected for the 33-yard kick that snapped Lafayette's two-game series winning streak.

Scheuerman was a standout performer for the Maroon and White, running for three touchdowns with 83 yards on 17 carries. Sophomore Tim Vangelas had a career receiving day, reeling in 10 balls for 75 yards as Reed's favorite target. Reed completed 27-of-40 for 22 yards with one interception.

The game was even through the first quarter. Lafayette scored with 3:37 left, putting together a 14-play drive that covered 78 yards. Lafayette picked up a 3^rd-and-1 near midfield with a Scheuerman rush and received another first down when Justin Adams took a hand-off on the reverse for 18 yards to the Bucknell 10. Three plays later Scheuerman punched it in on a two-yard run. Ryan Gralish added the PAT and Lafayette led 7-0 with 3:37 left in first quarter.

The Bison answered on their next drive, with a 45-yard touchdown toss from R.J. Nitti to Hartman. Hartman was able to shake free from the grasp of freshman linebacker Brandon Bryant and get to the endzone.  

Bucknell took its first lead of game near the 10-minute mark in the second quarter when Nitti hit Hartman for 19-yard touchdown to lead 14-7. Hartman, who had two touchdowns in the first half, entered the game with 11 receptions on the season and no career touchdowns.

The second half opened with a 75-yard scoring drive for the Leopards. Scheuerman had the big run on the drive, ripping off a 25-yard gain that took the ball to the six-yard line. He was hit late out of bounds on the play, moving the line of scrimmage to the three. Scheuerman scored on the next play to tie the game, 14-14, at 11:45.

On Bucknell's ensuing drive, it was the Leopard defense's turn. The line pressured Nitti 13-25-1, 252 yards, 2 TD who floated a throw that dropped into Matt Smalley's hands for his first interception of the season. Lafayette took over at the 14-yard line and Reed immediately hit Vangelas for nine yards. Two plays later, Scheuerman ran it in from three yards away to give Lafayette a 21-14 lead with 9:36 left in the third quarter.

Bucknell added a field goal three minutes later to cut the lead to 21-17, but Lafayette stretched its lead to seven with Gralish's 31-yard field goal with 9:20 left in the game. The teams exchanged punts on their next possessions and Bucknell got the ball back with 3:56 to go in the game, setting the stage for Lauletta's game-tying TD pass to Hartman and the decisive field goal in overtime.

Lafayette returns to action Nov. 8, traveling to Colgate for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

NOTES: Scheuerman ran for three touchdowns in the game, tying Tom Costello '91 for fifth place in career rushing touchdowns with 28. It was his second three-touchdown game (Georgetown) of the season and third of his career.
