EASTON, Pa. - Four Lafayette football players have earned places on the All-Patriot League Football Teams announced Tuesday afternoon. The Leopards placed three on the First Team and one on the Second Team.
Senior tailback Ross Scheuerman heads the list for the Leopards. A three-time second-team honoree, Scheuerman garnered a first-place selection, no doubt sealing his candidacy with a school and Patriot League record 304-yard performance against Lehigh in the 150th Meeting of College Football's Most-Played Rivlary.
That showing in front of a soldout Yankee Stadium crowd garnered him FCS Offensive Player of the Week from The Sports Network and Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors and is the top rushing performance by an FCS player this season. The Lehigh game pushed him over the 1000-yard plateau for the second time in his career (1,129).
Scheuerman leaves as one of the top running backs in school history, accumulating 3,504 rushing yards and 31 rushing touchdowns. This season, Scheuerman also led the team in receiving with 57 catches for 521 yards and three TD's, ending his career with 129 career grabs for 1,129 yards and eight TD's.
Lafayette secured two places on the All-Patriot League First-Team defense, both coming from the defensive backfield. Junior Matt Smalley accepts his second straight placement on the First Team. Smalley was one of the league's top cover cornerbacks, leading the team with 11 pass breakups and finishing with one interception. He was also third on the team in tackles (61) and tackles for loss (5.0). The junior also made significant contributions in the return game, averaging 23.5 yards per return on 13 chances.
Senior Jared Roberts is a first-team selection at strong safety after securing second-team honors at the conclusion of 2013. Roberts was fourth on the team in tackles (57) and tied for second with a pair of interceptions. His interception returns this season went for 38 and 41 yards. Roberts' return ability was also on display on special teams, taking back punts an average of 27 yards per attempt on six tries.
Senior Zack Mazur collected All-Patriot League Second-Team laurels for the second straight season. He showed his versatility on the line, playing in three different positions (right tackle, left tackle and center) after injuries forced offensive line coach Stan Clayton to shift his responsibilities. Mazur helped pave the way for the second straight 1000-yard rushing season by Scheuerman including a dominating performance by the offensive line in the 150th meeting. In that game, the Leopards' used their seventh different front five. Mazur was a three-year starter who saw time in 35 games with 34 starts.
Lafayette finished the season 5-6 overall, ending third in the Patriot League standings after winning its last two conference games.
