Easton, Pa. – Linnel Macklin led four Leopards in double figures with 16 points, as the Lafayette women’s basketball team knocked off defending Patriot League champion and preseason favorite Army on Wednesday afternoon. Lafayette converted 26-of-29 from the free throw line in the 71-60 win.
Macklin’s 16 points came on 10-of-10 from the charity stripe. Lafayette’s (8-1, 1-0 PL) received double figures scoring from Emily Homan (15), Jamie O'Hare (15) and Maddie Peabody (10). For Army (8-3, 0-1) Kelsey Minato scored a game-high 37 points, while Aimee Oertner chipped in 13 for the Black Knights.
Macklin knocked down a pair of threes in the opening minutes to help the Leopards to an early 11-6 advantage. Annette Snow completed a three-point play, pushing the Lafayette lead to seven with seven and a half minutes to play in the first half.
With Homan on the bench in foul trouble, Army used a 13-2 run to take its first lead of the afternoon, 24-18. Brya Freeland’s three closed the gap to one, but the Black Knights took a 28-25 lead into the half.
Army came out of the half on a 6-2 spurt to increase its lead to seven. O’Hare cut the deficit to three, going coast-to-coast for two, with 16 minutes to play. O’Hare buried a three on the next possession to knot the game at 34. A deep three and another bucket from Minato pushed the Black Knights back up five.
