Newark, Del. - Lafayette men's lacrosse fell to Delaware 9-6 on Tuesday afternoon. Morgan Westby led the attack with a pair of goals in the loss. The Leopards moved to 1-3, while the Blue Hens improved to 4-2.
Trailing 1-0 in the first quarter, Mac Gallagher worked his way toward the goal and fired a shot past the Delaware goalie with 4:05 on the clock. Jason Sands got on the scoreboard two minutes to give the Leopards their first lead of the afternoon. Westby made it three in a row from Lafayette late in the first quarter, as the Leopards led 3-1 after one.
The Blue Hens answered Lafayette's three-goal spurt with three of their own to start the second quarter. Delaware took the lead 4-3 with five and a half minutes left in the first half. Brian Bock tied the game at four, taking a feed from Sonny Round at the 4:27 mark of the second period. Lafayette and Delaware went into the half knotted at four.
Delaware opened the scoring in the third quarter with a goal five minutes into the half. Westby answered two minutes later with his second goal of the game, and the Leopards tied the game at five. The Blue Hens took a 6-5 lead late in the third quarter.
After a pair of goals from the Blue Hens, Sands tallied his second goal of the game, to pull Lafayette within two, 8-6. Delaware pushed its advantage to three with five minutes to go and held on to beat Lafayette 9-6.
Ben Falcone got the start in between the pipes for the Leopards, making six saves in the loss. Round handed out a team-high two assists for Lafayette.
Lafayette continues Patriot League play at Navy on Friday night. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
