EASTON, Pa. – A pair of second-half goals helped Colgate past the Lafayette women’s soccer team in each team’s Patriot League opener on Saturday evening at Mike Bourger ’44 Field at Oaks Stadium.

With two minutes remaining in the opening half, the Raiders created the first real chance of the game when Catherine Williams found the ball at her feet at the top of the six-yard box one-on-one with the goalie. She looked to have an easy goal, but Lafayette goalkeeper Danielle Sedillo stuck out her left foot and made a brilliant kick save to keep the game scoreless going into the break.

The Raiders lit up the scoreboard for the first time in the 60th minute when Eliza Doll came through with a gorgeous goal for the 1-0 advantage. Doll received the ball at the top left corner of the box, put a move on a defender, and worked her way toward the center. Finding a pocket of space before entering the middle defenders, she sent a bender into the far-side corner, beating Sedillo for the opening goal.

Just three minutes later, Lafayette looked to have the equalizer when they worked a free kick from just outside the box on the right side. After being played in and booted around the box, the ball eventually found Joanna Scotti who sent a shot far side and Colgate goalkeeper Brenna Mason stretched out for a magnificent save to secure the Raiders’ lead.

In the 74th minute, Colgate added an insurance tally when Jenna Raepple made a run from the left side of the box into the middle and finished high and hard past Sedillo for the 2-0 edge.

The Raiders led the way in shots, 8-5, while Lafayette worked three corner-kick opportunities compared to just one for Colgate. Scotti and senior co-captain Jaclyn Giordano each tallied two shots for the Leopards and Melissa Lynskey added the fifth shot for the Maroon and White.

Next up for Lafayette is a trip to Annapolis, Md. to take on Navy on Friday at 7 p.m.
