WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -Trailing by 10 at halftime, No. 13/19 William and Mary scored 24 unanswered points to rally for a 33-19 win over Lafayette on Saturday night at Zable Stadium.

William and Mary quarterback Steve Cluley was the difference maker in the second half. After being held to minus-10 rushing yards in the first half, Cluley carved his way through the Lafayette defense after intermission, finishing with 87 rushing yards and two running scores. Cluley also completed a four-yard TD pass to start the decisive third quarter.

Lafayette sophomore QB Drew Reed, completed 22-of-29 for 217 yards and a touchdown. He connected with eight different targets with Mike Duncan making a team-best five grabs for 56 yards in his first game action of the season. On the ground, senior TB Ross Scheuerman had 160 yards rushing but just 43 in the second half.

The game opened with big plays from both offenses. The hosts drew first blood with as a 73-yard pass from Cluley to Tre McBride. That set up a three-yard scoring run by Kendell Anderson with 10:54 left in the first.

Sevens seconds later it was the Leopards' turn. On the first play from scrimmage, Scheuerman used Brian Keller and Dan Dellovade as lead blockers out of the backfield and tore off a 72-yard scoring run. Ryan Forrester added the PAT to tie the game at 7-7.

Early in the second quarter, Lafayette (1-2) had a chance to take the lead, settling for a 29-yard field goal attempt that Forrester missed wide left.

Later in the quarter, a mix of the run and pass led to the go-ahead score for the Leopards after they took over on their own 13-yard line. Freshman tailback DeSean Brown racked up 39 yards on the ground and Reed hit Keller (21 yards) and Duncan (16 yards) through the air. Reed's third completion of the drive went for six yards and a touchdown to Demetrius Dixon. The PAT was blocked and returned for two points by William and Mary as Lafayette led 13-9.

Just before the half, the Leopards converted a 4th-and-13 at the 23. Lafayette head coach Frank Tavani decided to go for it. Reed eluded the pressure, connected with Justin Adams for 19 yards and a first down. Lafayette had the ball 1st-and-goal at the four with 47 seconds left in the half.

On the next play, Reed dropped back, but found no open options. He ran in the ball from four yards out to cap a 60-yard scoring drive that covered 4:15. The PAT was no good and Lafayette led 19-9 at halftime.

In the third quarter, William and Mary took the lead and control of the game with 21 unanswered points. The Tribe finished off a 65-yard scoring drive with a four-yard pass from Cluley to Anderson who made a one-handed grab out of the backfield.

After a Leopard fumble near midfield, William and Mary peeled off an 11-play, 45-yard drive that ended with Cluley's 10-yard quarterback keeper. The Tribe converted two 4th-and-1 situations on the drive that gave William and Mary a 23-19 lead at 5:31 in the third.

The Tribe (3-1) extended that advantage with another Cluley touchdown, this time a four-yard run. The Leopards appeared to have forced a field goal attempt after an incomplete pass on 3rd-and-goal, but Lafayette was whistled for defensive holding. Cluley scored on the next play and William and Mary led 30-19. William and Mary added a career-long 49-yard field goal by John Carpenter with eight minutes left in the game.

Defensively for Lafayette, Chris Brockman and Colton Kirkpatrick led the team with nine tackles apiece while also registering a sack.

Lafayette returns home to host Wagner on Sept. 27 at 6 p.m., the first meeting between the schools since 1979.
