EASTON, Pa. - Binghamton's Jacque Rice found the back of the net off the fingertips of Lafayette keeper Kelly O'Brien in overtime as the Leopards' women's soccer team fell to the Bearcats, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
Seven minutes into the first overtime period, Rice was found at the top left corner of the box on a throw. The Binghamton forward turned and fired on net, grazing the hands of O'Brien and finding the side netting for the golden goal. O'Brien, a freshman, relieved sophomore goalie Danielle Sedillo at the start of the second half for her first collegiate action between the pipes.
The contest was an offensive affair featuring 31 shots total, with 20 coming from Binghamton. Both teams had plenty of chances to get on the board, but all four goalies, two from each side, were solid on their lines.
For Lafayette, Sedillo made six saves and allowed one goal, while O'Brien stopped five Binghamton shots on goal and allowed the gamewinner. On the other side, starter Gaby Gold made two saves before being relieved by Katie Hatziyianis in the 36th minute, who made two saves and allowed the lone Lafayette tally.
With just over two minutes remaining in the opening half, the Bearcats' Katie O'Neill played a beautiful ball over the top of the defensive line, finding Jocelyn Acor streaking down the middle of the field. Acor chipped the ball up over the charging Sedillo to open the scoring with a 1-0 advantage.
The Leopards played the half all the way to the end, though, as they knotted it up with just one second remaining on the clock. Sophomore Joanna Scotti worked her way down the right side and sent a bending cross in toward the goal mouth, connecting with sophomore Melissa Lynskey, who headed it home to knot the game at 1-1. The game would remain at that scoreline until the gamewinner in the 98th minute.
Binghamton led the way in shots, 20-11, and corner-kick opportunities, 5-4. Freshman Olivia Heitz tallied three shots to lead the Leopards offensively, while Scotti added two shots and picked up the assist on Lynskey's score.
The Leopards remain in Easton through the week, hosting UMass-Lowell on Friday at 7 p.m.
