Washington, D.C. - Lafayette fell on the road to Patriot League leading American, 63-44 on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. Emily Homan led the Leopards with 15 points. The Maroon and White moved to 3-3 in Patriot League play, while the Eagles improved to 6-0 in conference action.
Ashley Lutz returned to the lineup for the Leopards after missing a game with an ankle injury and scored nine points off the bench. American was led by Michelle Holmes with 23 points and seven rebounds. Jen Dumiak finished with game-highs in rebounds (9) and assists (8) for American.
American used a 9-2 run to open up a 13-6 lead with 13 minutes to play in the first half. Lutz slowed the spurt with a three from the top of the key. The Eagles bumped their advantage to 18-9 at the ten minute mark.
Lutz knocked down a baseline jumper, followed by a bucket from Homan to trim the deficit to six, 21-15 with six minutes to go in the opening frame. American pushed its edge up to 12 late in the first half and took a 32-19 lead into the break.
After American scored the first four points of the half, Lutz knocked down a jumper from the elbow, followed by a Homan basket on the low block to make it a 13-point spread. American answered with a six-point spurt to take a 42-23 lead.
Homan completed a three-point play with 15:58 on the clock to pull Lafayette to within 15. Another run from the Eagles pushed the spread to 22 points with 14 minutes to play. Homan's 11th point of the contest cut the deficit to 20 at the 11 minute mark.
Anna Ptasinski's three-pointer slowed American's five-point run and sliced the margin to 22. Homan moved the Leopards to within 18, 56-38 with six minutes left in the game. Maddie Peabody went coast-to-coast at the 5:02 mark, trimming the American lead to 16, but the Eagles answered with a three-pointer from Jordan Light to extend their advantage to 19 with 4:28 to go.
A pair of free throws from Jamie O'Hare with four minutes to play made it 59-42. Linnel Macklin's bucket in transition narrowed the gap to 15 with two minutes to play, but American was able to maintain its advantage and went on to take down the Leopards, 63-44.
The Leopards return to College Hill on Wednesday morning against Holy Cross. Wednesday's game is Lafayette's EASD Education Game with the opening tip schedule for 11:15 a.m.
