BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Emily Homan's second consecutive double-double was not enough, as Lehigh held off Lafayette's comeback bid. The Leopards pulled to within three in the final minutes, but were unable to get any closer in a 65-60 final.
Homan led Lafayette (10-9, 3-5 PL) with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Jamie O'Hare scored 14 points and handed out six assists. Lehigh (13-5, 5-3 PL) were led by Quinci Mann's 15 points. The Mountain Hawks knocked down 23-of-35 from the free throw line in the game and held a 53-44 advantage on the boards.
In the opening minutes, Lafayette and Lehigh exchanged baskets before an Anna Ptasinski three-pointer pushed the Leopards ahead 14-11. The Mountain Hawks used a 5-0 spurt to take a 16-14 lead midway through the half.
The teams continued to trade buckets until another six-point run from Lehigh in the final two minutes of the half gave the Mountain Hawks a 28-22 lead. O'Hare's three pointer with 29 seconds left in the half cut the deficit to three at the intermission.
Lehigh bumped its lead to five, early in the second half, before O'Hare countered for the Leopards with a triple from the wing. The Mountain Hawks answered with a 6-0 run to take a 40-32 lead with 15 minutes to play.
A pair of free throws from Linnel Macklin cut Lehigh advantage to six with 14 minutes to go. Lehigh extended its lead to nine, 44-35 at the 10:39 mark. A driving layup from O'Hare cut the spread to seven.
Trailing 48-37, Maddie Peabody came up with a steal and a bucket, followed by a pair from the charity stripe from Sammy Stipa to cut the lead to seven. Mann answered at the other end for Lehigh with a three to make it a 10-point game with seven minutes to play. Mann converted again for the Mountain Hawks on the fast break and Lehigh held a 53-41 advantage with 6:13 on the clock.
A pair of buckets from Homan at the five minute mark trimmed the deficit to ten. Peabody knocked down two free throws, followed by a fast break layup to slice the lead to six, 55-49. Sammy Stipa buried a three-pointer in front of the Leopard bench and the Leopards were within three with three minutes to go.
Lehigh pushed its advantage back up to six with two minutes to play. O'Hare fed Homan in the post for a bucket and Lafayette trailed 59-55 with 1:39 on the clock. After three free throws from Lehigh, Anna Ptasinski hit a three-pointer with 20 seconds left to make it a four-point game, but that was as close as the Leopards would get and the Mountain Hawks were able to hold on for a 65-60 win.
Lafayette hosts Colgate on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
