EASTON, Pa. – Junior Jamie O'Hare scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field, but Lafayette fell to visiting Navy, 65-60, on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards rallied from a 16-point deficit to the tie the game in the second half, but the Mids were able to escape with a five-point win.
Senior Emily Homan finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Lafayette moved to 11-10 overall and 4-6 in the Patriot League, while Navy improved to 12-9 overall and 6-4 in conference games. The Mids were led by Sarita Condie’s 17 points, including three shots from beyond the arc.
Navy jumped out to an early 10-1 lead with 16 minutes to play in the first half. Five straight points from O’Hare made it an eight-point game with 11:58 on the clock. The Mids bumped their lead up to double figures, 24-11, with eight minutes to go in the opening period.
An O’Hare triple with four minutes to play in the first half sparked a seven-point run from the Leopards that trimmed the lead to 31-26. The Mids responded with a 5-0 run to close the half and took a 36-26 lead into the break.
Homan scored the first four points for the Leopards in the second half to cut the deficit to nine with 18 minutes to play. O’Hare’s corner three with 17:20 on the clock made it a six-point game.
On the Lafayette’s next possession, Maddie Peabody found Sammy Stipa under the basket for two and Lafayette was within four, 39-35. At the 14:54 mark, Peabody took the ball coast-to-coast to cap an 11-0 run to tie the game at 39.
Navy countered with a 7-0 spurt of its own over the next two minutes to take a 46-39 advantage. O’Hare slowed the Mids run with a three at the 11 minute mark, but Navy pushed its lead up to eight, 52-44 with ten minutes left in the game.
An offensive rebound and lay-in from Marina Muenster increased Navy’s lead to 11 with 5:02 on the clock. O’Hare continued to keep the Leopards in the game with a three from the corner, followed by a pair from the free throw line to cut the spread to five at the 2:46 mark. A floater from Condie with a minute to play bumped the lead to seven.
Linnel Macklin made a reverse layup with forty seconds to play and a Homan lay-in made it a five-point game with 25 seconds to go. After a Navy turnover, Homan converted again down low and the Leopards were within three, 63-60. Navy missed the front end of two one-and-ones, but the Mids were able to collect two offensive rebounds and held on for a 65-60 victory.
The Leopards take on Bucknell Wednesday night in Lewisburg, Pa.
