EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team held its annual awards ceremony, celebrating the 2015 season, this past Saturday. The program honored its seniors and the efforts of the 2015 team, while looking forward to its 2016 campaign.
"It's important for us to honor our seniors for the efforts they continuously made on and off the field," head coach Jim Rogalski said. "Brian, Matt, Sonny and Cory will be great ambassadors for our program and we thank them for their dedication to Lafayette lacrosse."
Lafayette's senior class, consisting of Brian Bock, Matt Confort, Sonny Round and Cory Scheuerle, put together its most successful season as Leopards this past spring, recording four wins, including an 11-7 victory over Holy Cross on Senior Day.
Bock appeared in 49 games for the Maroon and White throughout his time on College Hill, earning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors on March 11, 2013, and Rookie of the Week honors on April 9, 2012. The Collegeville, Pa. native tallied seven goals and four assists during his senior campaign, including a hat trick and an assist in an 8-7 win over Monmouth on March 31.
Confort played in 48 games in the midfield for Lafayette, starting twice during his final season. A Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member during his freshman year, his most productive year came as a junior, picking up 18 ground balls and causing four turnovers.
Round is the goal-scorer of the group, leading the team in scoring and points his sophomore year with 27 and 40, respectively. Appearing in 44 contests for the Maroon and White, he tallied 10 goals his senior season, including a pair of markers in the season-opening win over Wagner on Feb. 13.
Scheuerle was a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection during his career and played in 51 games for Lafayette, including 13 starts right out of the gate as a freshman. A Gladwyn, Pa. native, Scheuerle tallied a goal and an assist on the attack unit for the Leopards in 2015, scoring against Penn on March 3.
In addition to the attention paid to Lafayette's Class of 2015, the Leopard coaching staff also handed out six individual awards.
The Bill Lawson Coaches' Award was given to Mac Gallagher. This honor, sponsored by Harvey Cohen '40, is given to the player who has shown the ability to consistently impact his teammates through his positive attitude and exceptional work ethic.
Scott McAvoy took home the Academic Excellence Award, given to the player with the highest grade-point average in the 2014-15 academic year, while Scheuerle was named the David Heard Award winner, given to the player who consistently inspired and led his teammates on and off the field through his unselfishness and loyalty to the team and Lafayette.
Eric Joseph was the team's Most Improved Player and Round was given the Leopard Award in recognition of his ability to consistently deal with adversity and the challenges of a season through leadership, sportsmanship and dedication.
Finally, Erik Cannon was chosen as Lafayette's 2015 Most Valuable Player. A Second-Team All-Patriot League selection on defense for the Maroon and White, Cannon led the Patriot League and finished second in the nation with 2.21 caused turnovers per game a year ago.
