EASTON, Pa. - Wednesday evening's thrilling 1-0 victory for the Lafayette men's soccer team over Bucknell at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium marked the 132nd career win for head coach Dennis Bohn, making him the all-time winningest coach in program history.
Bohn has spent his entire 15-year head-coaching career on College Hill and Wednesday's victory pushed him past Steve Reinhardt, who led the Leopards to a 131-66-19 record during the 1980-90 seasons. Making this feat all the more impressive is that Bohn is now the winningest coach of the most successful program in the Patriot League, with seven league titles to its credit, two more than the second-place team, Colgate, with five. He is one of six Patriot League coaches with over 100 career wins.
"Dennis is a great example of the type of mentor and coach we're so fortunate to have at Lafayette," director of athletics Bruce McCutcheon said. "He is singularly focused on his student-athletes' development as leaders, setting high expectations and challenging them to be elite. It is in that context that enables the championship culture enjoyed by the men's soccer program."
Lafayette's head man has led the Leopards to winning records in 12 of his 14 seasons on College Hill, including three Patriot League championships in five championship-game appearances and three NCAA Tournament berths. His on-field accomplishments are complemented by the success of his students in the classroom, as he's had three student-athletes (Blake Fink '13, Ryan Dodds '15 and Julian Plummer '15, twice) earn Academic All-Patriot League status since that honor's inception in 2012 and one in Mike Tortora that was named the 2006 Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Bohn mentored Zach Winthrop '13, winner of Lafayette's Pepper Prize his senior year, as well as one Charles L. Albert '08 award winner in Scott Hawkins (2008) and five Class of 1913 Trophy recipients in Matt Battiste (2004), Mike Tortora (2006), John Griffith (2009), Matt Reichenbach (2010) and Blake Fink (2013). The Pepper Prize is awarded annually to a Lafayette senior "who most nearly represents the Lafayette ideal," the Albert Award is presented annually to the most outstanding senior-athlete and the Class of 1913 Trophy goes annually to the senior student-athlete that has attained the greatest distinction as an athlete and a scholar.
Additionally, Lafayette's team grade-point average has been above 3.0 for 26 straight semesters entering the 2015-16 academic year. Bohn currently resides in Forks Township with his two sons, Cameron and Quinn.
The Maroon and White are exceeding all expectations early in their Patriot League season, tied for second with a 2-0-1 league record after being picked to finish 10th in the 10-team league in its preseason poll. Lafayette returns to the pitch this weekend, traveling to Washington, D.C. on Saturday to battle with American at 1 p.m.
