Spiders Drop Leopards in Tournament Opener

Dec. 28, 2015

Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Lafayette was held to single-digit points in three out of four quarters of today's game against Richmond, canceling out a strong defensive performance in a 54-46 defeat to open up the University of Virginia Cavalier Classic Monday afternoon.

Jamie O'Hare reached double figures for a fifth-consecutive game, leading the Leopards with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Sammy Stipa added 12 points on a career-high four 3-pointers, while Ashley Lutz contributed eight points and 11 rebounds.

Janelle Hubbard was one of three players to score in double-digits for the Spiders (7-5), who snapped a three-game losing streak. Karleigh Wike (11 points, 12 rebounds) picked up a double-double off the bench and Bria Powell chipped in 11 points.

Richmond held a 15-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter, turning five Lafayette turnovers into seven points on the other end. Trailing 13-5 with 4:22 remaining, the Leopards held the Spiders without a field goal for the remainder of the frame but could only get two points closer on the scoreboard.

An O'Hare 3-pointer got the Maroon and White within three points at 20-17 with 4:07 to go before halftime. The final six points of the second quarter, however, were scored by Richmond, which went into the intermission with its largest lead of the half.

Neither team shot greater than 32 percent through the first 20 minutes, and both squads were under 25 percent from 3-point range. The Spiders earned six extra points from the free throw line, going 6-for-8 from the charity stripe while Lafayette did not receive any free throw opportunities.

The offensive tempo picked up in the third quarter, with the two teams combining for 42 points. Richmond took its largest lead of the game after a free throw from Wike made it 39-27 with 5:29 left, but a Stipa 3-pointer then began a 12-3 stretch for the Leopards. Angela Ribarich capped the run with a short jumper to reduce the deficit to 42-39 with a little over one minute to play.

Lafayette shot 9-of-14 from the field in the third, and made all four of its attempts from long distance. That momentum, though, did not carry over into the final quarter, as the Maroon and White were held off the scoreboard until O'Hare sank a free throw with 4:56 left, and they did not make their first field goal until a Ribarich jumper with 1:59 to go.

The margin was still only eight points after that jumper, but the Leopards did not get any closer the rest of the way. The Spiders ended the contest with 25 free throw attempts compared to only six for Lafayette.

The Leopards, who began the contest with only nine available players, were reduced to seven by the end after Alex Cantwell and Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby each fouled out in the closing minutes of the fourth. O'Hare played all 40 minutes for the second time this season, while Lutz logged a career-high 38 minutes.

Lafayette (2-8) is right back in action tomorrow afternoon, concluding tournament play with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Coppin State.

Notes:

O'Hare continues to close in on 1,000 points for her career, as she now stands at 949 after her 17-point output today.

Cantwell made the first start of her collegiate career in place of an injured Maia Hood. She totaled three rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes of action.
