Dec. 29, 2015 Box Score
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Lafayette appeared to be on track for its third victory of the season, as back-to-back jump shots from Sammy Stipa gave the Leopards a 43-36 advantage over Coppin State with 4:24 left in the third quarter Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles, though, then went on an 18-2 run over the next 9:52 of play, and Lafayette committed 12 of its season-high 27 turnovers over the final 14 minutes in an eventual 64-57 setback.
Stipa had a career-high 17 points in the defeat, hitting her first seven shots and going 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Coppin State (3-9), though, scored 28 points off of Leopard giveaways to snap a six-game losing streak. Genesis Lucas, who was one of four players to score in double figures, led the Eagles with 15 points.
Jamie O'Hare added 12 points, five assists and three steals for the Maroon and White, and she was named to the Cavalier Classic All-Tournament Team following the game. The last of her five helpers was the 316th of her career, moving her into a tie with Stacey Cagenello '87 for sixth place all-time in program history.
Lafayette enjoyed its first lead of the tournament in the opening minute when Stipa, the Patriot League-leader in 3-point percentage, nailed her first long-distance attempt of the afternoon. Tied at 7-7 at the first media timeout, the Leopards regained their lead on Stipa's second 3-pointer, and they took a 20-16 advantage into the second quarter.
Angela Ribarich knocked down a jumper to give the Maroon and White a six-point edge to start the second, but the Eagles responded with an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the contest at 24-22. A Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby layup ended the offensive lull with 5:06 to play, and Stipa sank a layup of her own in the final minute to give Lafayette a 31-30 lead heading into the intermission.
The Leopards shot 5-of-11 from 3-point range in the opening half. Coppin State, despite shooting 35.7 percent from the field, forced 13 turnovers and grabbed nine offensive rebounds to keep the game close. Stipa led all scorers with 11 points, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor.
Ottewill-Soulsby started the third quarter off strong, hitting all three of her field goal attempts to crack double-figures for the fourth time this season. She finished with 10 points and eight boards before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter.
Lafayette's 43-36 advantage was its largest of the contest, and it forced an Eagle timeout. They closed the third quarter on a 10-0 run after the break, and continued to keep the Leopards off the scoreboard until O'Hare drained a layup 3:03 into the final frame.
Lafayette would get within three points on two occasions in the final two minutes, the last of which came with 27 seconds left on the clock when Annette Snow hit a pair of free throws. Jordan Swails responded with two free throws of her own to seal the win for Coppin State five seconds later.
Alex Cantwell, making her second-consecutive start, grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the Maroon and White, and Snow had a season-high seven points in 10 minutes off the bench.
Today was the final non-conference game of the season for the Leopards (2-9). They return to the Patriot League portion of their schedule on Saturday, traveling to Loyola for a 2 p.m. matchup.
Notes:
O'Hare is only two assists away from tying Lindsay Myers '06 for fifth place in the all-time program rankings.
Stipa has now made 15 of her first 22 attempts from long distance (68.2 percent) to begin the 2015-16 season.
Ribarich had a game-high four blocks off the bench, one short of her season-high.
