EASTON, Pa. -- A career-game for Sammy Stipa highlighted an overall night to remember for Lafayette on Friday, with the Leopards jumping out to an 11-0 lead and never looking back in a 77-59 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn.
Stipa finished with 11 assists, becoming the first Lafayette player to reach double figures since 1999. The sophomore guard also set a career-high in points with 15, including a heave from half court that found nothing but net to end the third quarter.
Jamie O'Hare, meanwhile, netted a team-high 21 points, going 5-for-7 from 3-point range. The last of those long balls was the 151st of her career, moving her alone into second-place in team history past Cristin Zavocki '09. The Leopards shot 52.5 percent from the floor overall, their best shooting percentage in a game since Dec. 31, 2011 against Pittsburgh (55.8 percent), and they made 10 of their 16 attempts from 3-point range (62.5 percent).
Tonight's first quarter was the most-productive of the season thus far for Lafayette, with the home team jumping ahead 24-10 after the opening 10 minutes. The lead was 11-0 before the Terriers sank a free throw with 5:36 on the clock, and all five starters hit at least one basket in the first five minutes of play.
The Leopards (2-5) forced nine first-quarter turnovers and hit 11 of their 17 shots from the floor. St. Francis, meanwhile, hit only one field goal, relying on an 8-for-10 performance from the free throw line for a majority of its points.
Lafayette picked up right where it left off in the next quarter, leading by as many as 22 points on two separate occasions before taking a 45-24 advantage into the break. The Terriers did not hit their second shot from the field until Leah Fechko made a 3-pointer with 4:31 left.
Stipa led the way with seven points in the frame, and she also chipped in four assists and two steals for the Maroon and White. She had five swipes overall in the contest, setting yet another career high. The 45 points were the most for Lafayette in a half since a 46-point output in the second half against Army West Point in last year's conference opener on Dec. 31.
The Leopards continued to build their lead in the second half, increasing the margin as high as 30 points early in the fourth quarter. Stipa provided the highlight of the season thus far at the end of the third, taking a pass from Maia Hood right in front of the scorers' table at half court and swishing in her third 3-pointer of the game as time expired.
St. Francis (1-5) managed a 12-4 run in the final 3:39 of play to reduce the final deficit to 18 points. Fechko had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Terriers, who claimed the Northeast Conference championship in 2014-15.
Lafayette had four players reach double figures for a second-straight game. Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby eclipsed her previous career-high of 12 points, set last Sunday against Saint Peter's, by one with a 13-point effort tonight. She also added seven rebounds, matched her career-high with three blocks, and set a new career mark with four assists. Angela Ribarich also cracked double digits, supplying 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and Ashley Lutz grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
Lafayette has one more contest remaining, a 5 p.m. tilt at Wagner on Wednesday, before beginning Patriot League play at home against Colgate on Dec. 22.
Notes:
The last player for Lafayette to net double-digit assists was Sara Harris '00, who recorded 10 in a 64-55 win over Lehigh on Feb. 26, 1999.
O'Hare entered tonight tied for fourth in the NCAA with 4.2 steals per game, and she added four more thefts tonight, all in the first quarter. With her 151 made 3-pointers, she is only 17 away from tying Kara Stetler '07 for the program record.
Tonight's 24 first-quarter points were the most in a frame for Lafayette this season. The previous high had been 21, set on three different occasions.
