Leopards Suffer Road Setback at Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Lafayette shot 25.5 percent from the field in the first three quarters and dropped a 69-48 decision at Wagner in its final game before the start of Patriot League play.

The Seahawks, in comparison, made 44.9 percent of their shots through three, and led by as many as 30 points midway through the final quarter. Jamie O'Hare totaled 11 points and five assists, while Alex Cantwell had her most-productive game of the season, contributing six points to along with a team-high eight rebounds and four steals.

A pair of double-digit Wagner runs made the difference in the opening half. Lafayette jumped out to an early 6-2 lead on 3-pointers from Sammy Stipa and O'Hare, but the Seahawks then rattled off 18-unanswered points over the next 7:27 of play. Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby stopped the bleeding with a layup in the final minute of the opening quarter.

Trailing 20-8 to start the second, the Leopards scored eight of the quarter's first 10 points, capped off by a 3-point play from Ottewill-Soulsby. Wagner, though, followed with a 12-0 run to expand its lead to 34-18, and the home team maintained a 36-20 edge heading into the second half.

Sofia Roma had 10 of her game-high 18 rebounds before the intermission for the Seahawks (2-5). Wagner shot 50 percent (16-32) from the floor in the first half, while Lafayette was held to 25 percent shooting (8-32).

The Seahawks continued to build its advantage in the third quarter, outscoring the Maroon and White by a 21-10 margin. The Leopards ended the game on a 14-5 run to make the final score more respectable.

Lafayette reached double-digits in steals for the fourth time in five games, finishing with 12 on the evening. In addition to Cantwell's four steals, O'Hare added three thefts while Ottewill-Soulsby and Stipa each had two.

The Leopards forced 18 Wagner turnovers, but were outrebounded by a 52-36 total. Four players scored in double-figures for the Seahawks.

Lafayette (2-6) now has 13 days off for finals before returning to Kirby Sports Center at 5 p.m. on Dec. 22 to host Colgate. That contest will be the Patriot League opener for both squads.

NOTES:

Sophomore center Ellen Graham made her season-debut midway through the third quarter. She sank a pair of free throws and grabbed a career-high five rebounds over eight minutes of play.

Wagner guard Jasmine Nwajei averaged 24.8 points per game last season, ranking her second in all of Division I, but the Leopards held her to 12 points this evening on 5-of-20 shooting from the floor.
