EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette used a 15-6 run in the final four minutes to take down rival Lehigh, 59-51, on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon. Seniors Emily Homan and Linnel Macklin led the Leopards with 12 points apiece.
The Maroon and Whiter improved to 13-14 overall and 6-10 in Patriot League play, while Lehigh moved to 17-9 overall and 9-7 in conference games. Lafayette controlled the majority of the game, leading for 28 minutes. Junior Jamie O'Hare finished in double figures with 10 points and senior Maddie Peabody tied her career-high with eight rebounds to go along with eight points and five assists.
Lafayette ran out to a 13-6 lead as senior Brya Freeland and Homan each chipped in four points in the opening six minutes. A three from O’Hare and a pull-up jumper from Macklin helped the Leopards maintain a six-point cushion, 20-14, with 3:49 to play in the half.
Macklin’s second triple of the game with less than two minutes to play pushed the spread to 27-18. Lafayette maintained a seven-point advantage over the final two minutes and went into the half ahead 29-22.
Lehigh opened the second half on an 11-4 run to take its first lead of the game with 14 minutes to play. A three from O’Hare slowed the Mountain Hawk run and cut the deficit to four, 40-36, at the 12-minute mark.
A pair from Homan at the free throw line trimmed the margin to 42-41 with 8:30 to play. After a Lehigh three, Macklin came up with a steal and bucket, followed by O’Hare’s dish to Homan to tie the game at 45 with seven minutes remaining.
Trailing 47-45, Macklin knocked down a deep two to tie the game at 47 with four minutes to play. A possession later Macklin drove and kicked to Ashley Lutz for a baseline jumper, giving Lafayette a 49-48 advantage.
O’Hare deflected a pass that Homan collected and returned to O’Hare for a lay-in to push the lead to 51-48 with 2:21 to play. Peabody helped maintain the three-point margin with a pull-up jumper with 1:38 on the clock.
Homan was able to beat her defender to the basket to push the lead to 55-50 with less than a minute to play. Lehigh was forced to foul Peabody hit two from the charity strip with 16.7 seconds remaining to bump the lead to 59-51.
The Leopards close out the regular season with a pair of road games next week. Lafayette will travel to Colgate on Wednesday night and Army on Feb. 28.
