CONWAY, S.C. - Day two of the Kickin' Chicken Classic pitted Lafayette against Big 10 foe Maryland and host Coastal Carolina, who handed the Leopards 8-2 and 13-2 losses, respectively.
"Great teams make every pitch count, and that's what happened today. We did a great job fighting back in game one but lacked the energy and belief to come all the way back. That is part of the process and development of a young team, belief in yourself no matter the situation or the name on the jersey across from you," said Lafayette head coach Jexx Varner.
Lafayette trailed from the outset in game one as Maryland got to Leopard starter Stephanie Thomas for a three-spot in the bottom of the first. Corey Schwartz and Mandy Gardner each singled home a run and Hannah Dewey doubled in another.
The Maroon and White cut into the lead in the third inning. Kaitlyn Schmeister struck out the first two batters of the inning before a Kelly Lallis singled up the middle. Jenna Didio kept things going, connecting for a single to right that got by the fielder and allowed Lallis to score. The Leopards cut the deficit to 3-2 when Morgan Biddle reached on a fielding error that scored Didio. The rally ended with two aboard when Bryn Gornick lined out to second.
Maryland slowly rebuilt its lead, adding a run in the bottom of the third and two each in the fifth and sixth innings, using two-run home runs by Schwartz (3-for-3) and Bridget Hawvermale for the 8-2 final.
Thomas (0-2) was hit with the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. Schmeister (1-1) surrendered two hits in seven innings and struck out nine.
Lafayette ran into a potent Coastal Carolina offense in game two, as the Chanticleers ripped open the game with 12 runs over the first three innings in a 13-2 ending.
Staked to a 5-0 lead, Coastal Carolina erupted for seven runs in the third inning after sending 10 batters to the plate. Kory Hayden delivered the big blow of the inning, a two-out grand slam, and Annie Robison connected for a two-run shot.
The Leopards got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, as Stephanie Schreiber scored on a fielding error with the bases loaded. The next batter, Gornick, was hit by a pitch for the second run of the inning. Didio finished the game 3-for-3 with a double from the lead-off spot.
Coastal Carolina starting pitcher Kelsey Dominick (1-0) held the Leopards to three hits over four innings while fanning two in the circle win. Lindsey Cherry (0-2) and Gornick each pitched a pair of innings with the starter Cherry allowing seven runs on seven hits and Gornick giving up six runs on six hits.
"In game two, we showed some pride to put a rally together and Jenna Didio had a heck of a day!" Varner said. "We need to trust in the process and value each time we step across those lines. We put this schedule together for a reason and we will be better as long as we find our consistency and take advantage of every rep we have in a game."
Lafayette's closes out the opening weekend tournament on Sunday morning, battling Virginia Tech at 9:30 a.m. at Coastal Carolina Softball Stadium.
