COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Big Ten foe Maryland captured both games of a Sunday night doubleheader with Lafayette softball, winning 9-1 and 14-0.
In the first game, Maryland (16-9) broke open a two-run game with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 7-0 lead.
Lafayette scored its only run of the game in the top of the fourth. Aided by two errors to start the inning, the Leopards scored on a passed ball.
The Leopards were held to a pair of hits by Maryland starter Kaitlyn Schmeiser who surrendered singles to Stephanie Thomas and Kelly Lallis.
Lafayette starter Kristyn Marinelli took the loss, allowing seven runs (three earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and seven walks in 2.2 innings. Bryn Gornick threw 1.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits.
In the nightcap of the evening twinbill, Maryland erupted for 12 runs in the third inning en route to a 14-0 final. Lindsey Schmeiser and Corey Schwartz each homered in the Terps' rally that sent 16 batters to the plate.
Lindsey Cherry took the pitching loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings. Thomas and Gornick threw the remaining inning and a third.
Lallis and Morgan Biddle registered hits for the Leopards (0-13) in the game.
Lafayette will continue Spring Break play on Monday with the addition of games against Rhode Island (11 a.m.) and UMBC (3 p.m.) at UMBC.
