CHARLESTON, S.C. - A three-run homer in the ninth inning by sophomore Alex Woinski broke a 6-6 tie to help Lafayette to a 9-6 victory over Charleston Southern on Tuesday night at CSU Ballpark.
The win snapped a five-game skid for Lafayette, which improved its record to 2-6. It was the first home run of the season for Woinski, who drove in four runs on the day. The Leopards pounded out 11 hits in the game, with two each coming from Steven Cohen, Andrew Landolfi, Tyler Hudson and Brett Thompson. Senior Parker Hills, who scored on the decisive homer, drove in two runs of his own.
Lafayette relief pitcher Ryan Callanan (1-0) was credited with the win on the mound, having entered in the seventh inning. His season ERA remains at 0.00 after tossing the final 2.1 frames, and he struck out three while allowing two hits.
Charleston Southern Kyle Dyson (0-1) took the loss for the Bucs, who fell to 10-8 on the year. CSU collected 12 hits in the game but left 11 runners on base.
The Leopards built an early lead with three runs in their first turn at the dish. Hills plated Cohen and Landolfi with a single before Hudson raced home on a sacrifice fly by Woinski.
Charleston Southern answered in the third inning with a pair of RBI singles by Chase Shelton and Andrew Widell to cut the Lafayette lead to one.
The Leopards got those two runs back in the sixth, with Tim Lazor scoring the first on a sacrifice bunt from Jackson Kramer, and Michael Coniglio scoring the second on an RBI single from Thompson.
CSU gave Lafayette a scare in the seventh, rallying for four runs to take a brief 6-5 lead. Shelton doubled home two before Cole Murphy scored on a wild pitch. Shelton then notched the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from Robbie Streett.
An RBI groundout from Cohen in the eighth scored Coniglio to knot the game at 6-6 and set up the Leopards for Woinski's dramatic shot in the ninth. Callanan delivered a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to seal the victory.
Lafayette will play four games at Penn this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, both scheduled to start at noon. Saturday's twin bill was supposed to be played in Easton, but the playing surface at Kamine Stadium is not suitable enough yet due to the melting of snow and rain earlier this week.
