BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior Lindsey Cherry pitched her first shutout of the season, leading Lafayette to a 1-0 win over UMBC on Wednesday afternoon.
Cherry scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out two in the Leopards' first win of the season. Cherry stranded eight UMBC baserunners in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Leopards scored the game-winning run in the fourth inning. Stephanie Thomas led off with a single, one of two hits for her in the game. Bryn Gornick followed with her own base knock and Lafayette was in business with runners at first and second and no outs.
Allison Brown came to the plate, attempting to advance the runners with a sacrifice bunt. The third baseman fielded the ball, but threw it away, allowing Thomas two score from second. UMBC starter Kim Puccio struck out the next three batters to end the threat with the lone run across.
From that point on, UMBC stranded a runner each inning as the Leopards' 1-0 advantage held for the final. Lafayette's defense came up with a big play in the bottom of the seventh, turning a 6-4-3 double play to end the game as the UMBC baserunner was called for interference.
In the second game, Lafayette managed just four hits (two by Kelly Lallis) in a 4-2 loss.
Lafayette opened the scoring in the second inning. Allison Brown doubled with one out in the inning and later scored on a throwing error.
UMBC took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring a pair of runs on a sac fly and another on an error to move ahead 2-1.
The Retrievers extended their lead in the home half of the fifth. No. 3 Taylor Hall drove in Emily Neal who had the rally with a lead-off double. UMBC led 3-1.
The teams traded runs in the sixth inning. Lafayette scored when Bryn Gornick singled home Lallis. UMBC answered with a sac fly to lead 4-2.
UMBC (8-11) starter Jessica Holte retired the Leopards in order in the seventh. She struck out seven, allowing one earned run on four hits. Stephanie Thomas took the loss despite striking out five and not walking a batter.
Lafayette (1-16) was scheduled to play Coppin State on Thursday, but that game has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled. Lafayette next plays on March 21 when the Leopards open Patriot League play at Bucknell.
