ELON, N.C. - For the first time in nearly a month, the Lafayette softball team found itself in game action. Having recently had two tournaments cancelled because of weather, Lafayette traveled to Elon, N.C. for the first of four games this weekend.
The Leopards' rust showed against a 10-4 Elon squad as Lafayette committed a pair of errors and managed three hits in an 8-0 final.
Lafayette threatened in the top of the first as freshman Jenna Didio led off the game with a double. Classmate Samantha Sweigart was hit by a pitch and the Leopards had runners on second and third with two outs before a foul out.
Elon scored two runs in the first inning off Lafayette starter Stephanie Thomas. Emily Roper and Carey Million (3-for-3) each singled in runners for the 2-0 advantage.
The Phoenix put away the game with six runs on six hits in the third inning. Million singled in two more runs with a knock up the middle and Aly Quintana (2-for-2) belted a two-run home run for the hosts who secured the 8-0 final.
Offensively for the Leopards, Thomas accounted for two of the team's three hits, which included a double.
Thomas took the loss in the circle, tossing 2.2 innings while allowing eight runs (6 earned) on eight hits. Lindsey Cherry threw the final 1.1 innings, surrendering one hit against the six batters she faced.
Lafayette (0-6) will play two games on Saturday, facing Elon at 3 p.m. and Hampton at 5:15 p.m. with an early morning game vs. Central Connecticut State on Sunday to close out the weekend.
