ELON, N.C. - Lafayette softball lost a pair of pitcher's duels on Saturday in the second day of the Elon Softball Tournament, dropping a 2-0 decision to the hosts and a 1-0 final to Hampton in a late-afternoon doubleheader.

Sophomore Kristyn Marinelli had a strong outing in the circle against Elon. She allowed four hits in 5.1 innings while striking out three and walking five. The only runs she surrendered came in the bottom of the first.

Hannah Olson led off the game with the only extra-base hit in the contest, a double. Marinelli loaded the bases with a hit batter and a walk. Carey Million's one-out single gave the Phoenix the early 2-0 lead.

Offensively, Lafayette had six hits to Elon's four, but could not push a runner past second base. Freshman outfielder Stephanie Thomas had her second two-hit game of the weekend while classmate Rebecca Dvoark also contributed a pair of singles.

Byrn Gornick threw the final two-thirds of the sixth inning and did not allow a baserunner. Kayla Caruso (4 IP, 5 H, 0 ER) earned the victory and Caitlin O'Shea garnered the three-inning save for Elon, allowing just one hit.

Game two was more of the same stellar pitching by both starters. Linsdsey Cherry took the ball for the Leopards, tossing 6.2 innings while surrendering one run on two hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Hampton scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Taylor Clark led off with an infield single and was sacrificed to second. Clark moved 60 feet closer on a ground ball and scored on a wild pitch in the 1-0 final.

The Leopards had their best scoring opportunity in the top half of the sixth inning. Lafayette had two runners aboard with one out following a Samantha Sweigart walk and a Gornick single. Dvorak doubled to left, but pinch runner Jenna Orlando was cut down at the plate, trying to score. The inning ended with two runners left on base as Marinelli grounded out to second. Lafayette stranded seven runners in the game.

Allyson Babinsack collected the pitching win, scattering three hits while striking out three and walking five.

"It was a tough day. We out-hit both teams today and played very good defense all day. Kristyn and Lindsey threw two fantastic games and even without the W's they made huge strides today," said Lafayette head coach Jexx Varner. "Offensively our hits were scattered but we had our chances. We had a few aggressive base running mistakes today but Quinlan's stolen base was clutch at the time. We will learn how much we can push and when to push it as we go along. All it will take is one clutch hit with runners in scoring position to get that ball rolling."

Lafayette closes the tournament on Sunday, playing Central Connecticut State at 10:45 a.m.
