ELON, N.C. - Lafayette softball closed out the Elon Softball Tournament with another solid pitching performance from sophomore Kristyn Marinelli in a 2-0 loss to Central Connecticut State on Sunday.

Marinelli gave up two runs on six hits in six innings and walked five. Central Connecticut starter Laura Messina, who had eight strikeouts, held the Lafayette offense to two hits on the afternoon, singles by Samantha Sweigart and Morgan Biddle. She retired the Leopards in order from the fourth inning on.

Central Connecticut State (4-0) scored all of its offense in the bottom of the fourth inning. Eileen Purcell (2-for-2) drew a lead-off walk and Kat Malcolm followed with an infield single. The Blue Devils loaded the bases with another base on balls, setting the stage for Katie Schmidt. Schmidt connected with a single up the middle to plate a pair of runs and give CCSU all of the offense it needed.

"Kristyn threw very, very well again. She knows she needs to cut down on her walks but she continues to battle and work out of jams. The two-RBI single was an inch away from being a line out back to Kristyn," said Lafayette head coach Jexx Varner. "Our offense has to get better. We know a couple of mechanical things we need to work on and our mentality with runners on has to be more confident. With all that said, we are happy with our improvements and pleased that the things we get the least work on back home (defense on dirt and live pitching) are developing strengths. The offense will get there.

Lafayette (0-9) is slated to return to action on Friday beginning three days of competition in the Capital Invite being hosted on the campuses of Maryland and George Washington.
